Internet Usage Increases (and Radio Streaming)

January 28, 2009 2 comments
More and more people are flocking to the Internet for all sorts of things from watching videos, reading the news, researching, and even listening to live radio streams. Americans are spending more time online than they have in the past. According to eMarketer.com, Americans spend approximately 30% of their leisure time on the Internet. When they aren’t working, taking care of the kids, or doing other non-leisurely activates, they are probably online surfing the web.

The use of newspapers is shrinking. Newspaper advertising revenues have been declining over the past few years. From 2007 to 2008, there has been a 16.4% decrease in advertising revenue. What’s the cause of all this? People are finding the Internet to be the “one-stop-shop” for everything. You can read the news online without the hassle of stopping on the corner to pick up a newspaper, find research, listen to music, watch videos, connect with friends, and much more.

This increase in Internet usage is causing business owners to jump on the bandwagon, if they haven’t done so already. Radio stations are even broadcasting thru a different channel - live radio streaming over the Internet. More and more radio stations are now uploading their live content to their websites where users can click a “Listen Live” button that spawns a player. Now you can listen to your favorite music station or talk station while at work and at home… you don’t have to be sitting in your car anymore to enjoy AM or FM radio either.

Even ministries are ditching the radio to stream their sermons online. A ministry called Desiring God pulled the plug on its 160 radio outlets across the country. They have moved all of their content online. Desiring God saw an increase in listeners of 85-90%, more than what they imagined. See the full report here.

If your purpose is to “get the word out,” radio streaming may be the choice for you. You don’t need to spend thousands a month to send content to AM or FM, all you need is a website and some software…and you’re set. Online streaming gives you good exposure on the Internet and helps you market your website. The more listeners you have that visit your website, the better your search engine rankings could become. In this day, being a follower on the Internet is a must. If you aren’t doing what everyone else is doing chances are, you will be left behind.

Update on Google AdWords

Stumbling upon Google’s AdWords policies for allowable content, we found that Google recently updated their policy regarding hard liquor in their paid ads. Wonder what made the change…?

Although the mention of hard liquor in Google’s paid ads is allowable, advertisers still can’t directly promote the sale of hard liquor; but they are allowed to promote recipes for drinks and branding information like vodka brands (simply for branding). Here is Google’s new policy regarding hard liquor:

“Ads are not permitted to directly promote the sale of hard alcohol and liqueur. This means that the sale of hard alcohol and liqueur cannot be promoted in ads or be the purpose of your site (occupying a significant portion of your site). However, ads for hard alcohol and liqueur with the sole purpose of branding may target the U.S.”

In the past, advertisers weren’t able to include any mention of hard liquor in their ads…not even mention of brands. For example, you can now do a Google search for “vodka drinks” and come up with paid ads from vodka companies and other companies promoting drink recipes. Since the ads don’t actually offer the “sale” of liquor in the ads Google will allow it.

Good luck to all the liquor companies!
