Google PageRank Algorithm Update

December 31, 2008

Google has just updated their PageRank algorithm which means many websites' PageRank could possibly change. This is very good news for websites that increased in PageRank but bad for websites that decreased. Google updated their algorithm for New Years…but trying to keep track of when Google updates their algorithms is impossible since they do it sporadically.

Many of you will notice the little green bar at the top of your Google Toolbar has moved either to the left or to the right (if you have Google Toolbar installed and the PageRank enabled; if not, go here: http://toolbar.google.com. I just checked three of our landing pages that were created within the past couple months and ranked 0 yesterday are now all 2 today: top SEO placement, radio streaming services, free website traffic report. However, a couple pages on our main website have decreased.

I’ve noticed in the past Google was updating their PageRank algorithm when some of our main site’s webpages dropped to not even being ranked. Then the next day or the next week they were back to where they originally were - very strange. It seems as if Google was probably trying to test and tweak their algorithm.

Google’s PageRank is based on the amount of links pointing to your website factoring in the quality of those pages linking to you. If the page that’s linking to you has a high PageRank it can increase your PageRank. However if you have very low ranked webpages linking to your page it can decrease your PageRank somewhat. Increasing PageRank is easier than decreasing.
